Sohn des Hermann, Arzt, und der Fanny Mathilde Thommen. Schulen in Waldenburg und Basel; Mechanikerlehre bei der Thommen AG Waldenburg; Ausbildung zum Instruktionsoffizier der Kavallerie. Gewinnt den Ruf eines draufgängerischen Offiziers. Oberst im Generalstab. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs Aktivdienst als Stabsoffizier sowie als Kommandant eines Radfahrer-, dann eines Infanterieregiments und verschiedener Schulen der leichten Truppe. Verwaltungsrat bei der Revue Thommen AG Waldenburg ab 1944; in dieser Firma Leiter der Abteilung für Flugzeuginstrumentenbau ab 1946. Kommandant der 2. schweiz. Repatriierungskommission für Kriegsgefangene in Korea 1953/54.
