Sohn des Johannes, Tagelöhner, und der Maria Meyer von Laufen. Heirat 1842 Anna Maria Scherrer von Laufen. Nach einer kurzen Schulzeit in Laufen absolviert er eine Steinhauerlehre. Er arbeitet als Steinhauer, Bote, Stadtweibel und bewirtschaftet einen kleinen Bauernhof.
