Sohn des Mathias, Landwirt und Posamenter, und der Eva Schaub, Posamenterin. 1. Heirat 1898 Maria Aenishänslin, Posamenterin, von Gelterkinden; 2. Heirat 1948 Lisette Fankhauser von Trub BE. Primarschule in Sissach. Verliert mit 12 Jahren die Mutter, verlässt die Bezirksschule und arbeitet zusammen mit seiner Schwester am von Hand betriebenen Posamentstuhl der Mutter. 1892 Eintritt in die Seidenbandfabrik. Gründet die Genossenschaft der Seidenbandweber und Heimposamenter. Als Vertreter der Heimposamenter im Verwaltungsrat der Elektra Sissach-Gelterkinden und der Elektra Genossenschaft Farnsburg. Mit 20 Jahren Eintritt in die Freisinnige Partei. Gründer und Präsident des Konsumvereins Gelterkinden.
