Sohn des Johannes, Lehrer, und der Anna Barbara Stoll. Heirat 1856 Emilie Barth von Basel. Gymnasium in Basel, Theologiestudium in Basel und Halle, VDM 1856. Pfarrer in Oltingen 1857-77. Gilt als sehr belesen. Gegner des Pietismus. Volkstümlicher Prediger und leutseliges Original. Hat im Pfarrhaus eine Schreinerwerkstatt, in der er für Gemeindemitglieder Reparaturen ausführt. Lehnt Berufung als Direktor an die Strafanstalt in Liestal ab. Sekretär der freiwilligen Armenpflege Basel 1877-1906. Daneben Religionslehrer am Gymnasium.
