Schulen in Waldenburg und Aarau; kaufmännische Lehre in Genf; Seilerlehre im väterlichen Geschäft. Artillerieoffizier, Hauptmann, Batteriekommandant. Führt das Geschäft des Vaters weiter. Übernimmt die Société d'Horlogerie à Waldenbourg 1859 und bringt sie zum Rentieren. Baut 1870 und 1885 zwei Uhrenfabriken (Thommens Uhrenfabriken). Mitgründer des Waldenburger Bezirksblattes 1876 und Initiant des Baus der Waldenburgerbahn 1879; deren Direktionspräsident bis 1890. Mitglied der Gemeinde- und Bezirksschulpflege Waldenburg; Gemeinderat in Waldenburg ab 1860. Während der Revisionsbewegung von 1861-63 Anti. Freisinniger Landrat 1864-90. Mitglied der Verwaltungsräte der BL Kantonalbank 1867-74 (Vizepräsident des Bankrats 1871), und der BL Hypothekenbank 1877-90. Nationalrat 1875-90, Mitglied der radikaldemokratischen Fraktion.
