Tochter des Max, Redaktor, und der Anna Grassi. Heirat Adolf Manz von Zürich. Schulen in Aarau; Ausbildung zur Schauspielerin in Berlin 1911-14. Debüt im Hoftheater Darmstadt 1914. Findet als Interpretin Hebbelscher Frauenrollen in Darmstadt 1916 Beachtung. Als Erste Heldin 1921 nach Bochum berufen. Zusammenarbeit mit Erwin Piscator in Berlin (u.a. Volksbühne) 1925-31. Auch als Filmschauspielerin tätig ab 1931 z.B. in Fritz Langs M - eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder. Weicht nach der Machtergreifung der NSDAP auf deutsche Bühnen aus, wo das politische Klima noch weniger verseucht ist. Lässt sich 1941 in Zürich nieder. Tritt hier im Schauspielhaus bis 1969 auf. Spielt auch auf anderen Schweizer Bühnen und in Filmen. Fruchtbar als Theater- und Sprechpädagogin. Gründerin 1951 und Leiterin des Kammersprechchors Zürich, mit dem sie ganz Europa bereist.
