Sohn des Franz Xaver Felix, Glashütteninhaber in Bärschwil, und der Margrit Marie Luzia Genoveva von Glutz-Ruchti. Privater Unterricht bei einem Geistlichen, Jesuitenkollegium in Solothurn, Luzern und Fribourg, Maturität in Porrentruy. Nicht abgeschlossenes Medizinstudium in Strassburg. Gleichzeitig erste geologische Feldstudien in den Vogesen und erste Kontakte mit Geologen, u.a. mit Charles-Edouard Thirria. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die Schweiz wird er Assistent des Neuenburger Geologieprofessors Louis Agassiz. 1838-41 erscheint sein grundlegendes Werk über den Solothurner Jura, mit dem er sich als eigentlicher Gründer der Paläoökologie in die damalige Avantgarde der Geologen einreiht. Berater beim Bau der Bahnlinien Basel-Delémont-Sonceboz-Biel, Sonceboz-St.Imier und Delémont-Porrentruy-Boncourt. Reisen führen ihn ins Mittelmeergebiet 1859 und nach Norwegen und Island 1861, wo er Zusammenhänge zwischen den Fossilien des Jura und den heutigen Meerestieren erkennt. Den Lebensabend verbringt er in der psychiatrischen Klinik in Bern.<br /> W.: Observations géologiques sur le Jura soleurois.
